The Corona crisis has made it clear how rapidly a virus can spread among humans, but there are also pathogens and harmful organisms in the plant world that can lead to large-scale crop failures or even the extinction of a species. To prevent diseases and parasites from abroad from reaching Hamburg and Germany, the Hamburg Plant Protection Office monitors the import of plants, fruits and vegetables from all over the world. Dr. Malgorzata Rybak is one of the few German experts on plant viruses. Together with her colleagues, she researches natural remedies against fungal and bacterial infestations and helps affected farmers to get the problems in their fields under control ecologically.
