In August 2007 six people were killed in front of an Italian restaurant in Duisburg. That’s when the German public noticed the existence of the Italian Mafia in Germany for the first time: living among us. Because of its central location in Europe, the infrastructure, and also because of the huge amount of bureaucracy North Rhine-Westfalia has been an ideal refuge for the Mafia for decades now. Experts estimate that the calabric Ndrangheta earns more than 50 billion Euros and the Italian Mafia in general about 130 billion. A huge amount of this money is made in Germany.
