Der dritte Weltkrieg

Good thing we have been spared this nightmare: "The Third World War". That's the title of a 90-minute historical fiction, the ZDF has aired in late 1998.

The fictional film scenario:

In view of the civil rights movement in Eastern Europe and the GDR in 1989 in Moscow, Mikhail Gorbachev is overthrown by a hard-line faction. The peaceful revolution precipitated by violence. It is a political and military East-West confrontation that escalated step by step and finally ends in a nuclear war.

His credibility and sensitivity of the film is replaced by the fact that the various stages of escalation in its history to the then valid secret plans of NATO and the Warsaw Pact are based. And the coup against Gorbachev was well known, actually taking place - albeit two years later, 1991.

The German-American cooperation combined and computer-animated scenes with archive footage of that time to an equally oppressive as captivating look at what might have happened ...
